64-year-old dies after being found unresponsive at New Westminster pool

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – A 64-year-old man has died after he was found unresponsive at the Canada Games Pool in New Westminster Wednesday evening.

The city says the man was swimming laps around 5:30 p.m. when lifeguards noticed he wasn’t moving.

“He had been swimming in the lanes when the lifeguard noticed he had stopped swimming and saw him face down and unresponsive so they jumped into their emergency procedures and performed a rescue,” says Steve Kellock, senior manager of recreation services and facilities.

According to the city first responders arrived shortly after and continued to perform CPR. Kellock says the man was transported to hospital with a pulse but he later passed away.

“We always make sure that whenever there’s any accident that occurs in any of our facilities, albeit a minor accident or something more major, that is an opportunity for us to you know further review our existing procedures and policies and make sure that we can take any learnings away with that,” Kellock adds.

The pool was closed for the remainder of the day Wednesday but has since reopened.
