East Vancouver fire

Jan. 22, 2019 editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the fire originated at a scrapyard in the area. That was based on initial, incorrect information from officials. The Vancouver Fire Department has since clarified that the scrapyard did not catch fire and was not involved in this incident.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The sound of exploding propane tanks rang out in an area of East Vancouver Monday night, when a business caught fire.

Firefighters were called to a business on Triumph Street — near Powell and Victoria — just before 9 p.m.

Assistant Chief Kevin Wilson with the Vancouver Fire Department says some motorbikes in the area went up in flames.

“We had propane tanks and acetylene tanks, so we had a number of explosions occurred,” he told NEWS 1130. “Considerable gases and flames involved.”

A large number of police cars and fire crews were on the scene of the second-alarm fire.

A caller to NEWS 1130 described an obvious odour in the air, “It’s really thick, it’s very, very sort of pungent. It’s not a good odour, definitely.”

Wilson explains the strange smell may linger well into the morning.

“With the damp, foggy weather, it wouldn’t clear as fast as we would like. There’s no open wind,” he said.

Fire Chief Darrell Reid says no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
