Two cars catch fire in YVR parkade

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Richmond fire crews have doused a pair of cars that caught on fire in the visitor’s parkade at Vancouver Airport.

Deputy Fire Chief Jim Wishlove says it happened at around 8 p.m. on May 6, and that it looked a lot worse than it actually was.

“If people were driving by they’d see an awful lot of really black, thick smoke coming from the parkade,” he says. “Obviously vehicles have a lot of combustible materials in them, a lot of paint, fuel, a lot of those things burn and they burn with really black, intense smoke.”

He says crews don’t yet know what caused the fire, but the damage was contained to the two cars.

“There were no injuries reported at all, and there’s no damage to any other vehicles that were parked nearby,” Wishlove says. “Unfortunately for the owners of those cars, their cars are really seriously damaged, but that’s really the extent of it.”

Airport operations were not affected by the incident, but some shuttles were rerouted while fire crews worked.
