Naked man stumbles on roof for hours in freezing weather in Newton: Surrey RCMP

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Surrey RCMP spent over four hours coaxing a naked man off the roof of a home in Newton.

The man was spotted on the roof of a house near 80 Avenue and 137A Street just before 10 p.m. Sunday.

Staff Sgt. Duane Honeyman says Mounties and negotiators were able to get the man down safely around 2 a.m.

“After conversing with our on-scene negotiator for a time the male did surrender to police and was taken into custody,” he tells NEWS 1130.

Mounties note the man did have clothes up on the roof with him but for whatever reason he decided to take them off.

The man was detained under the Mental Health Act due to his behavior and taken to hospital for treatment.

Honeyman says there may have been some damage to the property.

“From what I was told there potentially was some damage to the roof of the house and obviously, depending on the extent of that and the person’s mental state will dictate what further action will or will not be taken,” he explains.

The homeowners reportedly have no idea who the man is or where he came from. Police say the man may be in mental distress but have not confirmed any personal details.

This came as temperatures across Metro Vancouver plummeted overnight to below freezing levels.

Honeyman says the winter weather made the four-hour situation even more dangerous.

“It’s not a fun thing at any given time but you factor in the coldness and obviously people’s mobility gets restricted the colder they get and increases the risk of him potentially falling or slipping,” Honeyman says.
