Boat in Steveston bursts into flames, runs aground

A man is being treated in the hospital after his boat caught fire tonight in Richmond. The 39-foot boat was in the Fraser on the south side of Shady Island when the fire broke out just before 9pm.

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — A 39-foot boat caught fire and ran aground in shallow waters south of Steveston Wednesday evening, sending one person to the hospital.

It’s unclear what injuries the man suffered when he jumped from the vessel.

Richmond Fire Chief Tim Wilkinson says the boat was travelling along the river when the fire broke out just before 9 p.m.

He says the Coast Guard and Steveston Harbour Authority were called in to deal with the fire itself.

He add, the captain held onto a line after jumping from the boat as it drifted toward the shore ablaze.

“It was just drifting at that point. He was later picked up by the Steveston Harbour Authority and loaded into an ambulance.”

It’s unclear if this was a personal or commercial boat.
