Number of unique BCIT programs could be cut in the new year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Jobs are being lost and tuition will be going up at the British Columbia Institute of Technology next year because of a budget deficit. That deficit also means some of the institute’s unique programming could be cut.

Paul Reniers – who represents BCIT’s faculty and staff – says there are a number of programs on the chopping block. “Some of the programs have been announced; we know that a program called FilmFLEX [is getting cut], there’s a sustainable resource management option for industrial forestry, there’s a degree transfer option.”

Library resources are being cut and students could be paying more for course materials that used to be included in tuition, which will also increase.

The BCIT faculty and staff association will be meeting in January to discuss the cuts.
