Grinch steals items collected for Christmas Bureau from Surrey elementary school

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It seems another Grinch is at work — this time in Surrey.  Students at Royal Heights Elementary had collected items throughout the month for the Surrey Christmas Bureau and they were stolen in a break-in overnight.

Every year, students at the school participate in the 12 days of giving, bringing in items for the Food Bank and toys for needy kids.  The school’s principal says in a break-in around 2 a.m., a thief made off with two of the tall food-bank boxes full of toys kids had collected, leaving the food behind.

Special needs teacher Patricia Zimich tells News 1130 the whole thing makes her sick.  “We got to school this morning and here everybody was so deflated…how could somebody be so cruel?”  With Friday being the last day of school, Royal Heights’ principal says they aren’t planning to tell students.

Meanwhile, the bureau still needs the public’s help.  Their shelves are pretty full, however, there is one shelf that is scarce: newborn to 2-years-old.

The bureau is asking for disposable diapers, baby washcloths, digital thermometers, blankets, booties, sippy cups and the list goes.  They are open until 3 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.  Donations can be accepted at the toy depot at 12830 96th Avenue.  For more information call 604.581.9623 or 604.585.9614.
