Take care when vacationing in winter hot spots

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130):  Many Canadians will be jetting off to sunny destinations over the next couple of months to escape winter weather.  But be careful: places like the Dominican Republic, where a Quebec City man was killed over New Year’s, can be dangerous for tourists.

Holiday time is when we want to relax, but travel expert Scott Clute says letting your guard down is the last thing you should do.  He says people visiting popular winter get-away destinations like the Dominican and Mexico can find themselves in tough situations, especially in border towns like Tijuana.

Clute says the US State Department’s list of travel alerts and warnings can tell you which places could be dangerous.  “They will come up with a list of countries and areas in those countries that as a U.S. citizen you should be concerned about.  Unfortunately, the Canadian government doesn’t do that.  We often wait until after the fact has happened before we alarm our citizens about any problems that might incur.”

Clute says staying inside the walls of the resort you’re staying at will protect you from the worst of the violence in unsettled locations.
