“Highway of Heroes” as body of Langley soldier returns home

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Firefighters from across Metro Vancouver will line the highway today to pay their respects to fallen solider Private Garrett Chidley, whose body returns home today.

Following a repatriation ceremony in Ontario last weekend, the body of the 21 year old from Langley will arrive at YVR on a Canadian Forces plane this afternoon.

Richmond Fire Chief Jim Wishlove says his crews will be on the side of the road to show their respects. “This is a local individual, a local family and I think us as a local fire department can at the very least show our respect for the sacrifice of him and to just pay tribute to the difficult time his family is going through.”

If you want to come out and show your respects, firefighters will be along Highway 99 at the Westminster Highway Overpass, the Blundell Overpass, the entry to the Massey Tunnel at Ricemill Road near Steveston Highway, at the Highway 17 Overpass and at 152nd Street.

The hearse is expected to leave YVR at 5 pm. Chidley will be buried at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery in Surrey on Tuesday.

Private Chidley was killed December 30th in Afghanistan
