Neighbourhood Energy Unit converts waste water to energy

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Vancouver has unveiled a new building that converts sewer waste water into energy.  The Neighbourhood Energy Unit is the first of its kind in North America, and athletes at the Olympic Village will be among the first to benefit from the $30 million project.

The project-including the exhaust stacks at the south end of the Cambie Street Bridge–has been four years in the making, and will power 1,600 homes in the False Creek neighbourhood.  Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson wants Canada to lead the world in ‘green’ energy. “If we get these models right here, at the outset, it really stands us well for advancing this work and creating many more models throughout our country.”

The Neighbourhood Energy Unit will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent.  The federal government contributed $10 million to the project.
