Rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Howe Sound

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast and sections of East Vancouver Island through Friday morning. Environment Canada says we can expect 60 to 80 millimetres of rain, with 100 to 150 mm for parts of Vancouver Island.

News1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says the heaviest rain will be falling near the mountains.  A strong Pacific front is forecast to stall over the South Coast overnight, then gradually move east on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the South Coast region including Howe Sound, the North Shore mountains of Metro Vancouver, and the northern basins of the Fraser Valley.  In addition to the rain, freezing levels are forecast to rise to about 1,200-1,400 metres, which will cause snow melt that will contribute additional runoff to rivers.  The River Forecast Centre says river levels will begin to rise this afternoon and will continue overnight and into tomorrow.

A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of Central and East Vancouver Island.  Rivers, lakes and reservoirs are already high from earlier storms.
