Seventeen B.C. students still stuck in Haiti

NELSON (NEWS1130) – The situation is growing more tense by the minute for 17 B.C. high school students stuck in Haiti, and parents are desperately trying to get their kids back home. The students from Mt. Sentinel Secondary near Nelson are in relatively good shape despite their ordeal, but one student is reportedly suffering from broken ribs sustained in the quake.

The problem now is dwindling supplies, as more Haitians seek refuge in the mission where the students are staying. Norm Ouellet is one of the many concerned parents and points out the students don’t have much food left and very little water. Parents are hoping the Canadian Government makes getting their children back home a priority. “What we are asking for as parents is any opportunity, any window to get our kids out and get them home, and the kids are asking the same thing.”

He claims the government is listening to their concerns but Foreign Affairs can’t say when they will be able to get students out. “We fully understand what the government and the people of Haiti are going through. However, the government did say the priority was children and injuries and we have children there and we have injuries.”

Ouellet adds the students are helping out with rescue efforts and trying stay in good spirits, but they are getting concerned as the situation is escalating by the hour.
