Park Board councillor wants compensation for sports groups displaced by temporary Empire Stadium

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Park Board has unanimously carried a motion to look for help for sporting organizations that use Empire Stadium.

A number of amateur groups will be displaced once the BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps temporarily move to the stadium.

Commissioner Loretta Woodcock is asking the city, the PNE, and the company that manages BC Place to provide full support to locate and, if needed, upgrade other facilities in Vancouver for displaced sports groups.  She also says many of the affected amateur sports groups are upset they were not consulted about the Empire Stadium decision before it was announced.  The grass field at the site of the old stadium is used for slo-pitch leagues and other sports groups.

The Lions can’t play at BC Place this year or in 2011 because the stadium is getting a new roof and significant other upgrades, following the Olympic Games.
