Quick cash grab or fair penalty? Parking enforcement seems to be up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Those 24-hour Olympic no-stopping zones along Broadway and other main arteries aren’t in effect yet, but when they kick in, no-one will be plugging any meters. This morning we’re investigating reports of stepped-up enforcement along the busy and lucrative corridors ahead of the games.

Right now it will cost you $2.00 to park for an hour at Broadway and Fir as of January 1st and that’s in effect until 10:00p.m. But it will cost you a lot more if you risk it and get caught, something this man admits he does, “I’ve got a few more tickets lately than I’ve gotten before..Cambie, Broadway, right in there.”

While the number of tickets he gets seems to have gone up lately, he isn’t quite ready to tie it to the possibility that the city is trying to cash-in fast ahead of February 4th when Olympic restrictions mean no one will be paying for parking on many routes for almost a month.

The City of Vancouver says it hasn’t increased parking meter enforcement in Olympic no-stopping zones.  Councillor Raymond Louie says extra help has been hired, but not for any Olympic-related reason.  “We have to have extra bodies in order to cover off the additional time that was decided on by council–meaning the extension (of meters) from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.”

Louie says extra staff are also part of an initiative to protect residential parking near Olympic venues.
