No more second chances…

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’ve all been warned, now the grace period for using your cell phone behind the wheel is over. Police are reminding drivers they can be fined starting Monday.

Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham questions why people put their lives at risk for a phone call or a text. “What is it in your life that is so important, you have to text and have to phone? If you’re a brain surgeon or a chief constable, you may think you’re important but trust me, nothing is this important.”

He says if you’re really tempted to use your phone, just leave it in the trunk. Starting Monday you are subject to a $167 fine if you’re caught talking and driving. You will be fined $167 plus three demerits if you’re texting.

While the number of drivers caught using their phones is down, police say not everyone is getting the message – but they soon will.
