Halifax sailors return home from Haiti

After two months away, the crew of HMCS Halifax returned home Tuesday morning to cheering family members.

The navy frigate left January 14 for Haiti to help with earthquake relief efforts.

“Allow me to express how privileged I feel as Halifax captain and how humble I am  by the work of my officers and sailors,” says HMCS Halifax Cmdr. Josee Kurtz.

“In the face of disaster they have tackled all challenges head on, and I assure you that Canadians can be proud, as I am, that their values were carried with great honour and the utmost dedication.”

A sentiment repeated by the ship’s members.

“When we got there conditions were quite horrible, I was talking to one gentleman there and he gave us a list of things that they would love to see,” says Lieut. Andrew Tunstall.

“And by the end of two weeks we had built everything they wanted. The smiles on their faces and the Canadian flags that they had found and raised in the camp, I walked away knowing we had accomplished something.”

HMCS Athabaskan remains on station in Haiti and there’s no word yet when the destroyer will return home.
