Auditor General finds security gaps

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A previous investigation by Auditor General John Doyle found there were too many ways government and personal information can be skimmed from Victoria’s wireless system. Doyle’s new report recognizes great improvement in the system. “What we are looking at is that the security has improved and encryption is in place. That is all very positive and all very good.”

Doyle adds greater effort is still needed to make sure ministries comply with the policies and procedures that safeguard wireless transmissions. “We now need to make sure that we patrol the area properly have a detection processes in place to make sure all our good work does not go to waste.”

He also found SFU and BCIT now have adequate wireless security settings for their networks, adding there is still room for improvement in monitoring to ensure people don’t do things like plug their personal wireless devices into the net. Doyle says wireless technology is so important to government operations that more audits will be done to make sure the issue of security is taken seriously.
