B.C. to have snowmobile regulations in place within two years

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – B.C. will go through another winter before the province has any policies and regulations covering snowmobiles in the back country.

Solicitor General Kash Heed hopes to have rules in place by November 2011 following the weekend’s deadly avalanche near Revelstoke.

He says it’s possible the province will ban snowmobiles from areas known to have a high avalanche hazard.

“At Boulder Mountain, the signs were up that avalanche hazards were extreme. So if we have to move and implement outright closures, we will have to look at that,” says Heed.

However he does admit it would be impossible to police most of B.C.’s back country.

He says that’s why education has to be a big part of the regulatory process.
