Tent city on West Hastings to come down in a week

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Next week, those who haven’t already found shelter will be booted from a tent city on West Hastings, located between Abbott and Carrall Streets.

But Mayor Gregor Robertson says the city is working on finding space for the rest.

While the media spotlight on homelessness during the Olympics has faded, he says the issue hasn’t.

“It’s a huge priority of me personally, and for city hall. We’re focused on the goal of ending homelessness and we have a lot of work ahead of us in partnership with the province. Hopefully we can continue the work to get shelters and housing open,” he says.

Robertson hopes the province will kick in funding to keep several HEAT shelters open as well, seven of which are scheduled to close at the end of April.
