RCMP: Criminal charges possible after deadly avalanche

REVELSTOKE (NEWS1130) – Mounties say its investigation into events surrounding Saturday’s deadly avalanche near Revelstoke will be long and complex and could result in criminal charges.  Corporal Dan Moskaluk says a 10-person team from the RCMP Major Crimes unit will gather as much information as possible.

He adds the goal of the investigation is to determine if there’s evidence of a crime, or if anyone can be held accountable. “They’ll be gathering information, whether it’s from witness testimony, current legislation, or the criminal code itself. There’s a variety of charges that may apply. We have deaths that have occurred and physical injuries to persons.”

Two men from Alberta were killed and 31 people injured when a wall of snow came crashing down Boulder Mountain, slamming into a crowd of about 200 watching a snowmobiling event.

Survivors and experts say the situation could have been much worse if those left above the snow hadn’t been prepared with safety gear and technology to find others who were buried.
