Transportation Safety Board to improve critical safety issues

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Transportation Safety Board says things are good, but could be better.  Their latest watchlist is aimed at improving on critical safety issues in the country.

The operation of longer, heavier trains and dealing with plane crashes on land and water are just some of the topics addressed in the watch list.  Board chair Wendy Tadros is quite pleased with our country’s record in advancing safety.

She says over the last 20 years, only six per cent of their recommendations have been rated unsatisfactory by the board and 67 per cent have been rated as fully satisfactory.  “It’s that middle ground that we’re really concerned about, where the safety issue has been accepted and acknowledged, but there’s a lag in implementation, so for that 33 percent that’s really where we’re focusing.”

The list also addresses the frequency of collisions at railway crossings.  Roughly 380 were reported in the last 15 years.
