Whatever you’re doing tomorrow night, do it in the dark

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Earth Hour is on Saturday, with hundreds of cities across the globe set to cut the power for 60 minutes to save energy and promote environmental awareness.

People around the world are encouraged to turn off their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time. Over 280 cities in Canada will be taking part in Earth Hour, the most of any country in the world. For more information on Earth Hour, click here.

Tara Wood with WWF Canada says how you celebrate is up to you. “Some people like to sit at home, sit by Candlelight, maybe they are hanging out with the kids, playing some board games or having some friends over for some Earth Hour cocktails. Lots of creativity for that hour.”

Energy officials are expecting the amount of energy saved during the hour to be the most of the three years.

Tips for saving energy (and money):

– Installing a programmable thermostat: Turning the heating or cooling down during the day when no one is home can save people 10 per cent on their energy bill

– Caulking and sealing leaks: One caulked window that’s over 10 years old can save five to 10 per cent in heating costs

– Turning off lights and unplugging electronic devices when leaving a room

– Furnace filters: Changing it regularly can save as much as 10 per cent on a gas bill

– Understanding the energy pricing plan
