Helena Guergis resigns; RCMP investigation underway

By

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS1130) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has asked Mounties and the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioners to investigate unspecific allegations against Helena Guergis.  A now former Conservative MP who handed in her resignation Friday morning and was bounced from the federal cabinet and Conservative caucus amid an escalating scandal.

Harper refused to say what exactly police would be looking into.

The scandal surrounds an apparent tantrum she threw at a Charlottetown airport, questionable ethics and the legal woes of her husband, former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer.

However, Harper refused to speak about Guergis’ husband and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says that’s not good enough.  He says Jaffer can’t be considered a private citizen, given his relationship with a Crown minister.

Guergis has been serving as Minister of State for the Status of Women.  She and Jaffer have been the subject of scrutiny since he was charged with drunk driving and cocaine possession last year.

Guergis sent out an email Friday saying the last nine months have been “a very difficult time.”  She acknowledged mistakes and apologized again for her “emotional” outburst in Charlottetown.  She will continue to serve as MP for Simcoe-Grey just north of Toronto.
