Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Thirty years after starting the Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox continues to change lives.  Five hundred million dollars have been raised for cancer research in that time.

He had hoped to raise a million dollars for cancer research, but Terry Fox has done so much more.

Thirty years ago today he dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic off Newfoundland, filling two bottles of water. One to keep as a souvenir, the other to pour in the Pacific Ocean after he’d complete his Marathon of Hope.

Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother remembers the day his brother told him about the run.  “I didn’t think that was unachieveable for him, because everything he had tried to that point he was able to accomplish.  I thought if Terry said he was going to do it, he’s going to do it.  It was just the attitude he had.”

Annually, 40 countries around the world take part in the Terry Fox Run.
