Barge pulled by New Westminster tugboat capsizes off Oregon Coast

ASTORIA, OREGON (NEWS1130) – The New Westminster-based crew of a tugboat were not injured, after a barge they were pulling capsized off the coast of Oregon.  The tug ‘General Jackson’ was towing a load of scrap metal and 2,000 litres of fuel.

A light sheen of fuel has been seen near the accident site, about 500 kilometres south of Vancouver.    Rescue vessels were sent to the barge, which capsized in about 90 metres of water near an inlet off the Oregon coast.  The U.S. Coast Guard says the barge did not sink, and is currently upside down and being towed back to Canada.

Several years ago the General Jackson collided with “Luna” the killer whale in Nootka Sound.  The whale liked hanging around humans and boats, but died as a result of the injuries.
