Feds try to stop gas stations from gouging customers

By

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Drivers can expect to benefit from a new law tabled today in Ottawa. The “Fairness at the Pump” act will be targeting inaccurate gas pumps.

Random federal testing shows six per cent of gas pumps are inaccurate and two-thirds of those are ripping customers off. Conservative federal industry minister Tony Clement is introducing mandatory annual inspections.

“The onus would be on businesses to have equipment repaired an re-inspected within a limited time frame.”

He says some pumps were found to be over-charging a couple of bucks per tank, which can quickly add up.  Fines increase sharply for retailers who do not comply.
