Parade held in Montreal to thank Olympians and Paralympians

MONTREAL, QUE. (NEWS1130) – It’s been weeks since we said goodbye to the 2010 Games but our athletes are still being celebrated.  Tens of thousands of well-wishers and Montrealers came out to thank Team Canada during a parade held Friday.

The young and old, English and French — were all out there, wearing red and white Olympic gear — applauding the more than one hundred Olympians and Paralympians who took part in the parade down St. Catherine Street.

Sid Banerjee with the Canadian Press was there and says many of our athletes were stunned by the crowds.  “Hayley Wickenheiser, the Team Canada hockey player, was riding in a car with Scott Niedermayer and was telling him it’s probably the closest she’ll ever get to having a Stanley Cup-type parade.”

Banerjee says many athletes also wondered aloud why we don’t have a huge celebration every time our Olympians and Paralympians return from competition.
