Public or private education: Which students do better in university?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Parents who are thinking about moving their kids out of the public system because of all the cuts and school closures may want to re-consider.

UBC’s Dr. George Bluman looked into how well private school students did in first year university math compared to public school students. The numbers were a little surprising. “The students from the public schools have consistently done better than the students from independent schools. In fact, as the years went on, the gap actually widened.”

Bluman wonders if the nature of the schools contributed to the success. “It might have nothing to do with the preparation of students, it may be due to the fact that the public schools are more like a public university so the students are perhaps more on their own in school and they learn how to work on their own and aren’t as spoon-fed perhaps.”
