VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Sunday’s Sun Run in Vancouver was marred by violence as one man was slashed in an unprovoked attack.

A 36-year-old Surrey man had just finished the race and was grabbing his bags near the finish line. That was when the suspect, who is known to police and from the downtown east side, came up out of nowhere and slashed the victim across the face with a knife. Police they the two men did not know each other, and the suspect was not a participant in the run.

Helen saw the whole thing. “It was at the corner of Expo and Abbott. A bunch of people where like ‘stop that guy, stop that guy, he just stabbed someone’ so a whole bunch of runners tackled him and held him down. We called 911 and the police came.”

The victim was treated, received stitches and is going to be fine. The suspect is being held, police will assess his mental state and he will likely face charges of possession of dangerous weapon, assault causing bodily harm and assault with weapon.
