Poll: Internet usage continues to rise

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new survey indicates our reliance on the Internet continues to grow.
Four of five Canadians are regularly online.

That’s up from 73 per cent in 2007 and means over 21 million Canadians are on the Internet. The provinces with the highest rates of usage? B.C. leads the way followed by the neighbour to the east, Alberta.  In terms of cities, Calgary and Saskatoon have 89 per cent of people online, followed by Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton and Ottawa-Gatineau.

Also, the digital divide based on income, education and age is narrowing.  Sure people in the top quarter of  incomes are almost all online (94 per cent) but those with incomes of $30,000 a year or less are gaining ground – with 56 per cent of households connected compared  to 48 per cent two years ago.

Similar gains were made by those without post-secondary education and those over the age of 45, who account for 60 per cent of new Internet users.
