Preventing tick bites while outdoors

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A hike in the woods may be the plan this weekend, but before you head out, you may want to tick-proof yourself and your family.

To prevent bites Ken Cooper with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control says you should wear a hat, wear long sleeves and light clothes, tuck your pant legs into your boots and wear bug spray with DEET on your exposed skin.  “They are on the blades of grass.  If you don’t stick to the cleared trails but walk through the tall grass, ticks might latch onto you as you walk by.  They then crawl up and look for a place to latch on and take a blood meal.”

Although only a few ticks in B.C. carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease, many areas of the province are affected.  Ten cases were reported in 2009.
