OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Four officers from the Vancouver Police Department are in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall today to be inducted as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, by Governor General Michaelle Jean.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces honours a career of exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by police officers, and recognizes their commitment to Canada. The primary focus is on exceptional merit, contributions to policing and community development.

The recipients are: Deputy Chief Steve Sweeney, who completed his 30 years with the VPD in charge of the Department’s role in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games; Superintendent Al Niedtner, VPD Operations Officer for the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit; Inspector Dean Robinson, head of the VPD Gang Crime Unit and Integrated Gang Task Force; and Sergeant Shawn Coady, best known for creating the Memorial Ribbon for fallen officers, which has become an international symbol employed by police and civilians across North America.

The badge of the Order is the same as that of the Order of Military Merit, a blue-enamelled, straight-end cross (four arms, narrow at the centre, wider at the ends) with an annulus in red surmounted by St. Edward’s Crown.
