Economy grew by 6.1 per cent in first quarter

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Canada’s economy grew at an annualized rate of 6.1 per cent in the first quarter. Statistics Canada says the national gross domestic product increased by 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2010, compared with the final quarter of last year.

Real GDP increased 0.6 per cent in March from February, a seventh consecutive monthly advance.

In comparison, the U.S. economy grew by an annualized rate of 3.0 per cent in the first quarter.

Canadian production grew faster in the first quarter of 2010 than in the fourth quarter of 2009, when GDP grew at an annualized rate of 4.9 per cent.
