Feds look at ending pension payments for inmates

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Federal legislation expected today could kill the prospect of old-age pensions for inmates after word of it sparked intense reaction from Canadians back in March.

Clifford Olson sits in jail serving 11 consecutive life sentences for killing 11 children while collecting $1,100 a month for old age benefits.

It doesn’t sit well with most people in Vancouver we’re speaking with. “I think it’s really ridiculous. I mean there are some people that can’t even get that, that aren’t criminals – let alone those kind of criminals. That’s just appalling.”

It’s that kind of reaction that motivated the feds. Legislation expected today would affect about 1,000 inmates. If the bill passes, they would lose their guaranteed income supplement payments and would save us all about $10 million a year.
