Women’s group thinks more needs to be done to deal with domestic violence

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – B.C.’s chief coroner wants police and prosecutors to better coordinate their efforts to combat domestic violence. One anti-violence group says women have been left out of the equation.

A report looking into almost one dozen domestic violence cases recommends stronger information-sharing between government, police and the Crown to help victims and prevent violence.

But Dalya Israel with Women Against Violence Against Women says the report shows women make up the vast majority of domestic violence killing victims, and she thinks that’s being forgotten.

“The other piece is that women’s organizations are completely missing.  So there’s lots of talk about social service agencies and victim-serving programs.  But women’s organizations that are actually doing the life-promotion and life-saving work.”

Israel notes none of the report’s 19 recommendations talk about changing people’s attitudes on women and their worth.
