G8 Blog: It feels like Canada Day in Huntsville

By

HUNTSVILLE – It’s a little surreal to be here and listen to what’s going on in Toronto … it’s absolutely night and day.

Walking through downtown Huntsville, it feels like it could be Canada Day. They’ve got Canadian flags on all the storefronts and people handing them out to the tourists. The streets are PACKED. They’re preparing for a free concert tonight in the park … called Girl 8 – 8 up and coming female artists.

The only thing that would tip you off to the fact that it’s not some kind of holiday are the ISU every 10 feet, low flying helicopters and all the media. But no one’s bothered by it and all the ISU have been very friendly. I get the sense they recognize the impact this has been having on the area in terms of the hassles and are doing everything the can to lessen that impact.

I went to the official protest site … there were exactly 6 people there. They were all OPP. The lone protester is a Tibetan Monk who is standing in the flag park.

I met my new neighbours with the tanks. They were very nice. As you know, we had some inclement weather earlier today – they had the tanks covered with tarps and spend a good 10 minutes taking them all down so I could get a good shot.
