Boats involved in deadly collision at Shuswap Lake towed

CHASE (NEWS1130) – The houseboat and speedboat involved in a bizarre and deadly collision on Shuswap Lake have now been towed.  The operator of the houseboat was killed and several others were taken to hospital with various injuries, when it was hit head on by a speedboat.

Chase RCMP Sergeant Troy Beauregard says accidents like this one are rare, so what lies ahead is a complex investigation.

The deadly crash is raising questions about the attitude of some of those on the water.  Some listeners on the News1130 message board describe the atmosphere on the lake as one of ‘unrestricted fun and non-stop drinking.’

Beauregard insists there is enhanced policing on the water.  “We were out on the lake, doing enforcement in the days leading up to this.  It’s easy for people to say we need more policing as soon as a tragedy occurs.  There are some times that there are things we cannot police.”

Dangerous driving and alcohol have yet to be ruled out.  Depending on the outcome of the investigation, criminal charges could be recommended.

Beauregard says the most tragic aspect of this story, is the fact that it’s the kind of accident that’s totally preventable.
