Local politicians embracing changes to municipal election rules

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – City coucillors are embracing changes coming to municipal election laws. The changes follow 31 recommendations crafted by the Local Government Election Task Force.

Starting after the 2011 provincial election, we’re going to have four years between votes for mayor and council. Abbotsford Councillor Patricia Ross is in favour of the longer term.

Ross acknowledges whenever there’s an election, candidates try to get started on initiatives as soon as possible.  “When you’ve got to restart every three years, or interrupted by elections, it’s sort of a stop and go.  And if you can spread it out over a little bit longer you can get things underway.”

Some local politicians are concerned longer terms will discourage people from running or force more by-elections for those who can’t complete their terms.

A few of the other recommendations involve limits on campaign spending.  Those will be put in place for the next election.
