Think twice before adopting “free” pets online: SPCA

By

Nova Scotia’s SPCA says the rise of online classified sites is leading to an increase in unwanted cats and kittens.

Executive Director Kristin Williams says the number of animals coming in to Halifax shelters is up by 20 percent over last year.

She tells the CBC the society gets calls on a daily basis from people saying they adopted a free pet off Kijiji or a similar site that they don’t want anymore.

If the shelter is full and can’t take the pet, it goes without medical attention or gets abandoned.

Williams says people turn to the internet because they don’t want to pay the $125 adoption fee, which covers spay and neutering and vaccinations.

She says most new owners who get their pets online don’t bother with those procedures, leading to more problems.
