Surrey votes to allow secondary suites in homes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Surrey is moving forward with a plan to allow secondary suites in all single family homes.  Staff will now draft a broad policy to be voted on sometime in the fall.

City Councillor Marvin Hunt says historically, the city didn’t want secondary suites but they are now just changing with the times.  “Let’s put it this way, council tried to deal with it in June of 1975 and have them all disappear within five years, it certainly didn’t happen.

An Ipsos Reid poll found 63 per cent of those polled supported the idea of secondary suites.  Like Vancouver, Surrey City Council is concerned about things like parking and equitable taxes related to the suites.

One thing is for sure, the single family home must be occupied by the owner.
