Evacuation order downgraded to an alert for Bonaparte Lake residents

KAMLOOPS (NEWS1130) –  Helicopters are still bucketing hot spots around Bonapart Lake north of Kamloops this afternoon, but the fire that forced 125 people from their homes earlier this week is now 35 per cent contained.

The evacuation order has been downgraded to an alert, and 110 personnel continue working in the area.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper says the progress on the fire is the result of better weather conditions and the work of the additional crews brought on board by the B.C. Forest Service. “In addition to crews that we have in the Kamloops Fire Centre, we brought on crews from the Coastal Fire Centre to help with fire suppression efforts. Weather has been cooperating… The smoke cover that we saw overhead actually helped cool off the fire and reduce the fire activity.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
