Man airlifted from home after brush fire near Osoyoos

OSOYOOS (NEWS1130) – One person was airlifted from their home Monday evening after a brush fire broke out at Spotted Lake north of Osoyoos, and flames began rushing toward a subdivision near Highway 3.

Fire Information Officer Michaela Swan says the man had to be airlifted out because the road out was blocked by the fire. Many others in the area left voluntarily.

The grassfire broke out around 4 pm Monday and Swan says it quickly grew to 40 hectares, “It’s a wind driven fire in what we call flashy fuels, so that would be grass and sagebrush in that area.”

Close to 40 firefighters, four helicopters and a number of tankers have been helping battle the blaze.

The cause is under investigation and fire crews are hoping to have it contained by Tuesday morning.

Most people in the area have now returned home.
