WINTER HARBOUR (NEWS1130) – A desperate search is underway off northwest Vancouver Island. The Coast Guard is looking for a sports fishing charter boat which hasn’t been heard from since Monday morning.
The 19-foot aluminum Qualicum River Nine went on a trip from the northwestern tip of Vancouver Island with a guide and three guests from Qualicum Rivers Winter Harbour Fishing Lodge & Resort.
Gerry Pash with the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says the search effort started Monday afternoon and is being ramped up. “This morning, a CP-140 Aurora from Canadian Forces Base Comox and aircraft from provincial airlines joined the search effort.”
Pash explains winds in the area have been gale-force for much of the last couple of days.
The names or ages of the fishermen have not been released and Pash adds they are not wearing full survival suits.
