Not as many seniors living in West End

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada’s population is aging but in Vancouver’s West End, it’s getting younger.

Census numbers show the number of seniors living on the west side of the downtown peninsula has been steadily dropping over the last decade.

Christine Ackermann with Renters at Risk says the quiet streets of the West End are no longer a destination for the silver set. “And the answer to that is because the seniors who were here and are leaving, have been here for 25, 35, 45 years and then they’re leaving. It’s very rare that you see seniors moving into the West End for the first time when they’re a senior.”

In recent years, seniors in the West End have complained about ‘renovations’ – a loophole in the Residential Tenancy Act that allows landlords to do minor upgrades on suites and jack up the rent.
