A homeless man gets trapped in a garbage truck in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A homeless man went through a terrifying ordeal in Vancouver Thursday morning. The 37-year-old somehow ended up in the back of a garbage truck.

A woman living near Cardero and Robson flagged down the driver after she’s heard someone crying from the back of his garbage truck. The driver then stopped and dumped his load on the street. The injured man landed on top of the pile and was taken to hospital, where it was determined he suffered broken bones and severe bruising.

Constable Jana McGuinness says it looks like the victim was stuck in the back of the truck for quite some time. “The garbage truck was on its route, and somewhere around Davie and Burrard picked up a dumpster and we understand now from the man himself that he was inside the dumpster when it was picked up.”

Police are treating it as an accident, and it does not look like there will be any charges.

A manager with Waste Control Services says the driver of the truck was distraught and has been given the rest of the day off work. The company refrained from giving further comment, not even when asked if a company has a policy about checking trash bins before they’re dumped into the trucks.
