Campfire ban relaxed in some parts of B.C.

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Campfires will be allowed in certain parts of the province again as of noon on Friday, as the wildfire situation continues to get better.

Fire information officer Donna MacPherson says campers will be able to roast marshmallows over the fire in some other areas, including in the regional districts of Mount Waddington and Central Coast, including the portions of Tweedsmuir Park that are within those districts.

But, if you were hoping to have a campfire close to Metro Vancouver, you’re still out of luck. Because the rain near Metro Vancouver has been spotty, it will likely be a while before the ban is lifted closer to home. The southern part of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland are still in high to extreme fire danger rating.

Those ratings are coming down, however, across most of the province as weather helps decrease the fire activity. Crews are getting the upper hand on some of the bigger fires in the Cariboo, which has been a trouble spot all summer.

Campfire restrictions remain in place in Kamloops, Coastal and Cariboo regions.

And the fines for ignoring the warning can bite you back. You will be fined as much as $345 for violating the ban, but those fines can go up to a million dollars if a wildfire is started.
