Canada lagging behind other countries when it comes to education

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  Just as kids gear up for the start of another school year, education in Canada is getting a virtual ‘F.’

There is harsh criticism for our system compared to other industrialized countries. A five-year study of the system from the Canadian Council on Learning finds weaknesses even before kids begin their first year. By the time we grow up, over 40 per cent of us rank low on the international literacy scale.

Dr. Paul Cappon with the Canadian Council on Learning is concerned our educational system is getting worse, not better. “The main thing is that Canada is incoherent and disorganized in learning and education. The private and public sectors don’t work together well. The federal and provincial government simply don’t work together well. And information is not available on the national basis.”

Cappon says it’s not for a lack of money. In fact, Canada spends more on education than many developed nations. Instead, goals need to be set country-wide in line with those in the provinces.
