B.C. off track with its greenhouse gas emissions

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – B.C.’s goal of lowering greenhouse gas emissions is off to a slow start. The province’s second annual report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions shows a slight increase in pollution levels.

The first major benchmark, in 2020, is for greenhouse gas emissions to be a third lower than what they were in 2007. But this report shows in 2008, GHG output has actually increased by one per cent over the year before.

Minister of State for Climate Action John Yap explains where the increase came from. “Processes in the resource sector.  We know the oil and gas — the natural gas sector — was active.”

He points out the economy was still hot early in 2008, the climate action plan still relatively new, and the carbon tax didn’t take effect until the middle of the year.
