The city of Surrey comes up with an innovative approach to cut down on parking space

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Real estate in Surrey is expensive, so the city is floating a new idea to cut down on the size of parking lots at new condo developments and boost transit ridership at the same time. The idea is when someone buys a new condo in a heavily populated area of Surrey along a transit corridor, the developer will give that person a free transit pass.

Councilor Marvin Hunt says that should give people more of an incentive to take the bus, which will mean fewer cars, which will mean smaller parking lots. “When you consider the parking stall will cost somewhere around $20,000, there is an awful lot of incentive here to not build parking stalls that are just going to sit empty.”

Hunt says they still have quite a few hurdles to clear before the program is a go, but he’s hoping it will be up and running in the new year. He says the passes will just be for people living in highly populated areas along transit corridors.
