The city of Surrey might have to look back East for inspiration on its parking reduction plan

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The city of Surrey is looking into cutting down on parking space by giving people in condos free transit passes. But it’s no longer just an idea in Toronto, which became the first city to implement the program.

Toronto city councilor Howard Moscoe says getting the city to adopt the program was a six-year battle, and then there was the fight with the condo developers. But Moscoe says when those developers were told they could build smaller parking lots because people with bus passes tend to use their cars less, they gradually came around on the proposition. “It costs a developer about $27,000 to put up a parking spot. [That] buys a lot of transit time.”

Moscoe says the program was only adopted back in April, so it’s a little premature to say exactly how many cars it’s taken off the road.

Surrey city councilor Marvin Hunt says he’d like to see the program in his city sometime next year, but the idea is still just in the discussion stage.
